Drainage North Sydney: Everything Underground, Sorted
1000+ five-star reviews
When water goes where it should not, the answer is almost always underground. This is the drainage department of North Sydney plumbing: blocked drains, sewers, stormwater lines, the cameras that see down the pipe and the relining gear that repairs it without a trench.
Every drainage service we run in this suburb lives on this page or one click from it. Every job starts the same way too: a licensed plumber finds out exactly what is going on down there before anyone quotes a thing.

Which drain is complaining?
Locals usually ring with a symptom, not a diagnosis, and that is fine. Telling us what you can see and hear is our starting point, and the pattern of the symptom tells us which page you need.
- One slow or blocked fixture: drainage repair and installation or blocked drains
- Whole-of-house gurgling or sewer smells: blocked sewer
- Flooding, pooling or downpipe trouble: stormwater
- Recurring blockages or a mystery fault: CCTV drain inspections
- A drain that keeps blocking after clearing: pipe relining
A single slow fixture is usually a local blockage. Every drain gurgling at once is a main line. Water pooling around the yard after dry weather is a broken stormwater pipe, and sewage surfacing anywhere is a same-day job.
If water is actively entering your home right now, the emergency plumbing team handles the make-safe first. The drainage fix follows.
How the North Sydney ridge treats its drains
Geography shapes drains more than most people expect. This suburb sits on an elevated Hawkesbury sandstone ridge, with shale and rock underfoot and the harbour on either side, and broad flooding is genuinely uncommon here.
What the ridge does instead is shed water
That rush is what strains the older lines
Wet-weather blockages cluster on the lower slopes
So when locals describe a drain that only blocks when it storms, they are describing the ridge, not bad luck. The fix is to inspect the stormwater line, find where the surge escapes, and repair that section properly. That is precisely the kind of job this department exists for.
The six drainage services, at a glance
Every child page below carries the full detail: symptoms, process, what the fix involves and what it means for local properties specifically.
- Drainage Repair & Installation: new lines, replacements and repairs for drainage that is damaged, undersized or missing.
- Blocked Drains: the everyday blockage, cleared properly and diagnosed so it stays clear.
- Blocked Sewer: sewer-specific faults, from root intrusion to collapsed sections.
- Stormwater: downpipes, pits, surface drains and the surcharge problems of a built-up ridge.
- CCTV Drain Inspections: cameras down the pipe, so the repair targets the actual fault.
- Pipe Relining: a seamless new lining inside the old pipe, no trench required.
Clay pipes, township roots and a full education
The other half of the local story is age. Housing here was laid out from the 1830s, when this was the St Leonards township, and that era's homes were commonly served by clay drainage lines.
Clay was the standard of its day, and it lasts right up until it does not. Joints separate, sections crack, and once a crack opens, fine roots find it within a season or two.
The tree cover makes that worse in the best possible way. Mature street trees through the green spaces and older residential streets are part of what makes the suburb pleasant, and they are also single-minded about water. A root hair the width of thread enters a clay joint, thrives, thickens, and within a few years the line is a root ball with a pipe around it.
Many drain callouts here end the same honest way. The blockage was cleared, yes, but the camera showed the pipe itself is the real problem. No amount of clearing permanently rescues a cracked line.
It is not only the old stock either. The dense office, retail and dining precinct generates grease and fat that builds up in commercial and shared drainage, and apartment blocks concentrate dozens of kitchens and bathrooms onto shared stacks. Between the clay, the roots and the grease, this suburb gives a drainage crew a full education, and we work here daily.

Each drainage service, in detail
Drainage Repair & Installation
Some properties inherit drainage that was never adequate: undersized stormwater, a yard with nowhere for water to go, an extension plumbed by someone who guessed. We design and install new drainage properly, sized to the catchment and the ridge. The design is on paper before the first shovel.
- New stormwater and sewer lines, sized to the site
- Replacement of collapsed or undersized sections
- Downpipe and pit installations for renovations
Blocked Drains
The everyday call: a shower recess filling, a kitchen sink refusing to empty, a toilet rising when the laundry drains. We clear them with high-pressure jetting, and a camera look is recommended whenever a drain blocks more than once, because repeats mean the pipe itself is talking; see the blocked drains page.
Blocked Sewer
Sewer lines carry what nothing else in the house does, and when they block the signs are unmistakable: gurgling, smells, multiple fixtures backing up together. Faults here are usually roots in clay, grease in shared stacks, or a cracked section, and the blocked sewer page covers diagnosis, clearing and the strata paperwork.
Stormwater
Rain on a ridge has one direction, and it is down, so stormwater work here covers downpipes that flood a courtyard, pits that overflow in a downpour, and surface drains that never quite worked. We clear, repair and install drainage sized to the hard-paved catchment above it, and the stormwater page has the detail.
CCTV Drain Inspections
The single most useful tool in drainage is a waterproof camera fed through the line, showing every crack, root, offset and collapse with exact depth and position recorded. It turns a guess into a map, and it is how we quote relining with confidence; see CCTV drain inspections.
Pipe Relining
When a pipe is cracked, root-riddled or leaking at joints, the traditional answer was excavation: dig up the garden, the driveway, the courtyard. Relining does the work from within instead.
The method is clean and proven. We clean the line, insert a resin-saturated liner, inflate it against the pipe wall and cure it, leaving a seamless new pipe within the old one. Most jobs need little or no digging. The pipe relining page explains when it is the right call and when replacement still wins.
How it works
How we diagnose: camera, jet, then decide
Diagnosis is the spine of this department, and it runs in a deliberate order because the order saves money.
1. Look first. A CCTV drain inspection shows us the inside of the line before we commit to anything. Roots, cracks, collapsed sections, grease blankets and misaligned joints all look different on camera, and each one wants a different fix.
2. Clear what can be cleared. High-pressure water jetting cuts through roots, grease and debris and washes the line clean. If the pipe is sound, that is the whole job done.
3. Decide on the evidence. A sound pipe that was simply blocked needs nothing more. A cracked line that will keep catching roots needs pipe relining. A collapsed section needs drainage repair. The camera footage, not guesswork, makes that call, and you see what we see before you approve a dollar.
The alternative is the old way: clear it, take the money, come back next winter. We would rather fix the pipe once.

Roots, rock and rain: the three pressures on North Sydney drains
Three forces do most of the damage to drainage in this suburb, and knowing them tells you what to watch for.
Roots
Established trees in and around the green spaces and older streets push roots into aged drain joints, and they are the leading cause of the blockages we clear here. If a drain blocks twice in a year, assume roots until a camera says otherwise.
Rock
Shale and sandstone under the suburb means drainage lines often run through or over rock, which moves differently from soil and can stress older joints over decades.
Rain
The heavily built-up ridge sheds downpours fast, overloading stormwater drains during Sydney storms, so any low point on the property deserves working surface drainage before the next summer storm arrives.
Between them, they explain most of the drainage calls we take, and each has a well-established fix on the pages above.

Good questions, straight answers
Questions North Sydney locals ask about drainage
What are the signs of a blocked drain?
Gurgling from floor wastes and toilets, water pooling around outdoor drains, several fixtures backing up at once, and slow drainage that worsens over days are the classic signs, and together they usually point to a blockage in the shared line.
Do the clay pipes in older homes here need replacing?
Many terraces and semis still run original clay drainage from the suburb's 19th-century beginnings, and while cracked sections can often be relined without excavation, a camera inspection first tells us whether relining or replacement is the wiser spend.
Why do my drains block every time it storms?
The suburb sits on a heavily paved ridge where rain sheds fast, and storm downpours can surcharge older stormwater and sewer lines, so recurring wet-weather blockages usually mean a stormwater connection or joint problem worth inspecting.
Can you clear a blocked drain without digging up the garden?
Yes, in most cases high-pressure water jetting clears roots and debris from within the pipe, and where the line itself is damaged, pipe relining repairs it from the inside with little or no excavation.
How does a CCTV drain inspection work?
We feed a waterproof camera through the line and watch the footage live, locating cracks, roots, offsets and collapsed sections with their exact depth and position, so the fix targets the fault instead of a guess.
Who pays for drainage work in an apartment block?
It depends where the fault sits, because pipes inside your unit are generally the owner's responsibility while shared stacks and boundary drains usually fall to the owners corporation, and we quote in writing for both so the paperwork stays simple.
Is drainage work covered by your warranty?
Yes, everything we complete is covered by our Lifetime Labour Warranty, so if the workmanship is ever the problem, we come back and make it right at no cost.
