Emergency Plumbing North Sydney, Day and Night

1000+ five-star reviews

Water pouring through a ceiling in the small hours, a toilet climbing instead of flushing, gas odour drifting down a hallway. When plumbing fails in a suburb of towers, walk-up flats and 19th-century terraces, it fails fast.

This is the emergency department. It is the page you land on when something is wrong right now, part of Your Plumber North Sydney. Everything here is triage: what qualifies as urgent, what to shut off before the van arrives, and how an after-hours callout actually runs.

Real people answering the phones, day or night

When to call, and when it will keep

Water where it shouldn't be? Call now.

A burst pipe, a drain backing up, a hot water system leaking through the ceiling. When it's happening right now, don't wait for a callback. Speak to a licensed plumber, not an answering machine. Real humans answer the phone, day or night, and we're on-site fast.

Call (02) 9072 0528. Licensed plumber, not a machine.

The triage question

Is the problem getting worse by the hour? If water is moving, gas is smelling, sewage is surfacing or the whole property has lost hot water, it belongs in the emergency queue.

What will keep until tomorrow

One dripping tap, one slow sink, a shower that runs cold after ten minutes. Those are next-day jobs, and our general plumbing hub is the right door for them.

The warning band in between

A drain that gurgles every time the washing machine empties, or a hot water unit making noises it has never made, is a fault announcing itself. A quick CCTV drain inspection now beats the 2am version of the same problem.

Why North Sydney's night calls have a shape

The ridge and the storms. This suburb stands on a Hawkesbury sandstone ridge, elevated enough that widespread flooding is rare. But the dense city centre is heavily paved, and a Sydney downpour sheds off all that hard surface at once into drains never sized for it.

Where the water goes instead. It surcharges the stormwater and sewer lines in the built-up centre, backing up into older low-set properties at the height of the weather, usually after hours.

The towers. The newest apartment builds around the new metro station at Victoria Cross and along the rail corridor are full of flexi hoses under sinks and vanities. A burst flexi hose on a high floor sends water down through every apartment beneath it, with no warning at all.

The age of the pipes. Housing here goes back to the old St Leonards township of the 1830s, and the galvanised and clay lines from those decades do not fail politely. They let go in occupied homes, on winter nights, in terraces older than the plumbing inside them.

The five emergencies, and where to read about each

Every emergency we attend here falls into one of five categories. Three live in this department; two are shared with other departments because they carry both emergency and repair intent. Each has its own page with the detail.

Toilet overflowing

The fastest emergency to stop and the messiest to leave running. In an apartment block the cause is often shared, which changes both the fix and the paperwork, so shut the water at the cistern tap and see the toilet overflowing page.

No hot water

Losing hot water completely is urgent in any season, and in a mostly-rental suburb of units it is a landlord-and-tenant problem as much as a plumbing one. The fix is often smaller than feared, a valve, an element, a thermocouple, and the no hot water page tells you which.

Gas leaks

Gas does not give second chances, so we treat every reported odour as urgent. The gas leaks page covers what to switch off, what not to touch, and how testing and certification work, including the older fittings that surface during heritage renovations.

Burst pipes and flexi hoses

Between the old galvanised lines in the terraces and the flexi hoses in the towers, this is the highest-volume emergency we attend. The burst pipes page covers both worlds, because a hose failure on a tenth floor is a different job to a split pipe under a semi.

Blocked drains and stormwater surcharge

When several fixtures block at once, or sewage appears at the floor waste, the problem is in the shared line, not the fixture. The blocked drains page covers the full diagnosis, and stormwater covers the version that arrives with the weather.

Fully stocked service vans ready for call-outs

After dark in North Sydney: the calls that stay

The daytime rhythm

Through the day this is the Lower North Shore's commercial heart, a high-rise office district one bridge away from the CBD, and the calls reflect it: a blocked sink in a café kitchen, a failing tempering valve in an office amenity block, a leak reported by a building manager between meetings.

The night rhythm

The offices empty, the towers stay, and the emergencies shift to the residents: the flexi hose that lets go while everyone sleeps, the hot water unit that dies on the coldest night of July, the storm that surcharges the drains at 11pm with rain still falling.

The seasonal rhythm

Spring brings the renovation calls as the pre-1940 terraces open up, and renovations have a habit of finding problems that will not keep: an old gas fitting behind a wall, a cracked clay drain under the new bathroom. The vans are stocked for all three rhythms.

Good questions, straight answers

What counts as urgent: the three tests

Test one: is it damaging the property right now?

Active water, active sewage or an active gas odour all score yes. Damage compounds by the minute, and every minute between failure and shut-off is ceiling, carpet or cabinetry that will not come back. If you can watch it getting worse, it is an emergency even if it started small.

Test two: is it unsafe for the people inside?

Gas, sewage and scalding water are health risks, not just property risks. A gas odour anywhere on the property is an immediate emergency. Sewage at the floor waste is a contamination risk, particularly with children or pets, and those calls jump the queue.

Test three: is the home livable without the fix?

A total loss of hot water, or a single working toilet in a household of four, makes the home unlivable in practice. That is why those two problems sit in the emergency column even with no water pouring anywhere. Livability is the test, not drama.

The escalation table

| Problem | Signs | Do this now | Response | |---|---|---|---| | Burst pipe or flexi hose | Water pouring, hissing, ceiling bulging | Close the main water meter or isolating tap | Emergency attendance, water off first | | Gas odour | Smell indoors, at the meter or near appliances | Open windows, no flames or switches, isolate at the meter if trained | Priority emergency response | | Toilet overflowing | Water climbing past the rim, surging at floor waste | Close the cistern tap, keep clear of the water | Emergency attendance, isolate first | | Sewer backup | Several fixtures blocked, gurgling everywhere | Stop using all water, including the washing machine | Same-day emergency response | | No hot water, whole property | Every tap cold, unit silent or leaking | Check the isolating switch, note any error display | Urgent, usually same-day | | Stormwater surcharge | Water rising at grates during heavy rain | Move belongings clear, sandbag if you have them | Attendance as storm conditions allow |

How it works

After hours: how a 2am callout actually works

A person answers. The phone is picked up by a licensed plumber, not a machine, every hour of every day, weekends and public holidays included. They tell you two things immediately: what to shut off while you wait, and when we can realistically be there.

The van is stocked. For the common emergencies the parts are on board: flexi hoses and isolating taps, elements and valves, jetting gear and cameras. Most urgent jobs are secured and completed in a single visit.

Where a second visit is needed. The make-safe happens first, and the fixed price for the rest arrives in writing before any further work begins. There is no after-hours rate: a Sunday night burst pipe is quoted the same fixed way as a Tuesday morning one, and getting us to your door costs nothing.

How it works

Make-safe steps while you wait

  1. 01

    The main water meter

Every property has one: at the front boundary for a house, in a shared meter room for an apartment, or beside the service entry in a basement. Find yours before you need it.

Seconds matter. Locating the meter at 2am is the difference between a mop-up and a rebuild. Turn it fully clockwise and the property's water stops at the source; a flexi hose flooding a vanity is over the moment that valve closes.

  2. 02

    The gas isolation point

Gas meters carry a shut-off lever on the pipe beside them, and closing it stops supply to the whole property. Reach it only if you can do so safely, and never go searching for it with any flame source.

Open windows on the way out, leave light switches alone, and call from outside or a neighbour's. Those steps matter more than speed.

  3. 03

    The hot water isolation valve

Every hot water system has an isolating valve on the cold inlet, and closing it stops a leaking cylinder draining through your ceiling or cupboard. For an electric unit, kill power at the isolating switch too, but never while standing in water to reach it.

Those three valves, water, gas, hot water, are the whole make-safe toolkit. Whoever answers your call will walk you to the one your situation needs.

Good questions, straight answers

Questions North Sydney locals ask about emergencies

What qualifies as a plumbing emergency?

Anything actively damaging the property or putting people at risk, which in practice means burst pipes, overflowing toilets, gas odours, sewer backups and total hot water loss, all attended day and night.

Do you charge more for after-hours or weekend callouts?

No, after-hours and weekend jobs are quoted exactly as a weekday morning is, with no overtime rates, and the visit to your door is free whether the van arrives at 2am or 2pm.

How quickly can you get to a high-rise near the station?

We work the blocks between the rail corridor and the harbour daily, so the van heading to an emergency near the station or Victoria Cross has generally just wrapped a job a few streets away.

A flexi hose has burst under my vanity and water is spreading, what do I do first?

Shut the isolating tap under the sink or vanity if there is one, otherwise the main water meter, move what you can out of the water's path, then call us and we will step you through what comes next.

Is any gas odour always an emergency?

Yes, treat every gas odour as urgent, open windows, turn off appliances at the wall if it is safe, avoid flames and switches, and call us so a licensed gas plumber can test and certify the line.

Do you work with strata managers and building managers in the office precinct?

Yes, we deal directly with strata committees, building managers and owners, quoting the fix in writing, which matters in a suburb where so much of the housing sits inside managed blocks.

Is the call out fee really $0?

Yes, the assessment and quote cost you nothing, the full price lands on paper before tools come out, and declining the quote still leaves you owing nothing for the visit.
